Speaking of Deterring the Russians and keeping Europe Safe…

Phewwww, did you see the auditious drone attack that the Ukranians pulled off last week? If our world was not in permanent Enduring Disorder mode, it would be all anyone is talking about.. it would be on all the news and analysis programmes and on social media as an epoch defining moment. And yet it is almost drowned out by events in LA and Gaza.

It was as game changing and as audacious an attack as what the Israelis did to Hizbollah with the pager attack. Both operations combined intel, technology, special ops, and lengthy planning under conditions of complete secrecy. What the Ukrainians did is very likely to be used to greater strategic purpose than anything Israel has ever done. The Ukrainians seek to push for an outcome rather than just to degrade the enemy, which is why Israel under Bibi’s leadership is still an overall Disorderer despite its occasional tactical brilliance in Orderering and frequent moral lassitude but Ukraine seeks to be an Orderer and to push for an endgame..

Not all doom
Operation Spider's Web: opening Pandora's Box
Operation Spider’s Web, in which Ukraine disabled and destroyed around 40 of Russia’s most prized military planes, some of them located more than 4,000 kilometres from Kyiv, will be talked of as one of the boldest, most innovative special operations in history. It has been…

Now to pivot to today’s pod, Ukraine can do amazing things alone, but it can also be a key part of the Western Alliance in providing security architecture for Europe, especially if it works with the seven thousand pound gorilla in the room… NATO…

At different engagements throughout the month, NATO allies will meet in Brussels and the Hague to discuss Ukraine and defense spending – with Trump’s team putting pressure on the Europeans to up their spending to 5% of GDP. But with the Americans wavering on the alliance as a whole, and these unrealistic spending targets: Can NATO survive?

To find out, Arthur Snell speaks with Sten Rynning, professor and director of the Danish Institute for Advanced Study, University of Southern Denmark, and author of ‘NATO: From Cold War to Ukraine, a History of the World’s Most Powerful Alliance’.

The duo discuss the origins and evolution of NATO, the significance of Article 5, NATO’s complex relationship with France, and the challenges faced during the Afghanistan mission. Plus: the contentious issue of NATO's eastward expansion in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union, and the Alliance's role in maintaining Order in the Post-War era. And as they conclude the discussion, they explore the future of European security architecture, the importance of America's role in NATO, and – to Order the Disorder – the need for a cohesive European defense strategy.

Listen to Arthur’s Behind The Lines Podcast -

Key Quotes from our wise Dane, Sten:

It took two Russian invasions of Ukraine and two elections of Donald Trump to get the Europeans to wake up.  Right. And that, that, that's a lot of, of, of shaking.  That's of stuff.  Yeah. That's a lot of stuff.  Uh, but now we have finally woken up.   We have now seen the worst of the Trump presidency  in terms of, of outrageous, political announcement and I think we're seeing that  NATO is going to pull through.   It's by no means safe and sound, but I think the US will remain on, on board in NATO with its nuclear deterrent. And in the role of, capping off the military command.

Be patient with Trump.  Try to swallow whatever he, puts out out there  and the work on, on, on, on your priorities.  Do not make a sub club in nato.  Do not make a European pillar. That would, to be frank,  piss off the Americans. Because then they might leave and speed kills and, and, and then Europe will stand with the problem. So work consensus in nato, be patient.  Don't push out the Americans,  and then simply realize that if all this money that is going to be spent now on the European side, they will have to pull it together in a ways that will get a european way of war. We'll have to define our own way of war.
